GCSE Success!!

There was cause for great celebration at First Steps Women’s Centre for those ladies who achieved their GCSE English and Maths. There was 100% success rate in GCSE English with A, B and C grades earned. GCSE Maths results were also very pleasing with a pass rate of 71%.

Returning to learning can be very challenging for those women who have to juggle family responsibilities with their studies. Fortunately, First Steps offers an on-site crèche facility for women attending courses at the centre.  Some of the women who called to collect their results are pictured with their children.

Ursula Douglas, a successful student from Aughnacloy, commented on how much she enjoyed the course because of the camaraderie and support from fellow students as well as the help of an excellent tutor Ann Lethbridge.   Ursula hopes to continue her studies and has lined up an interview for an NVQ Assessors Award.

Another successful candidate in both English and Maths has been accepted to do her Social Work Studies.  Betty Byrne, a senior learner felt she fitted in perfectly with the younger women in the group.

The new academic year at the Centre commences on Monday 13th September when over 250 women will join a variety of classes from Basic English and Maths, personal development, money management to a full range of computers classes and holistic health courses.

New lift facility

We are currently in the process of installing a lift at the Centre so that the elderly and disabled women are able to access our courses.

It will also be useful for the mothers and their prams/buggies!!!

As you can see the installation is in the early stages and behind schedule as it had to be moved, but we hope to have it completed before Friday 10th September 2010!!!

We really are getting "up" -to-date!
