A message from our Patron Janet Gray MBE

I am deeply honoured and delighted to accept the role as Patron of First Steps Women’s Centre. I first heard about the centre in August 2009, when I was asked to come along and give a speech at the Graduation Ceremony. Without doubt the Graduation Day in October was a fantastic event. There were over 190 women who had gained a qualification between September 2008 & June 2009. I really enjoyed the drama highlighting the difficulties within families when people are unable to read or write. I have learned of the excellent work that First Steps has done and how it operates from year to year with the fear that it may lose funding. Despite this the staff, volunteers and Management Committee continue to work with pride and honour to ensure that the centre provides a first class service.

For those of you who have not heard of First Steps, the centre provides a whole host of courses, from Improving Your English & Maths, Personal  Development and Health Improvement programmes. These courses range from Digital Photography to GCSE English and Maths. The Centre also boasts of three childcare facilities and an outreach centre in Fivemiletown.

First Steps Women’s Centre is a beacon of hope and a very bright star. It provides a place for women and their children to come and learn, to make friends and to kick start their education and career. I understand that the main funders are Department for Employment and Learning, Department for Social Development and also the Big Lottery.  I would like to say to these funders to pay attention to the work of First Steps Women’s centre and other Women’s centre’s across Northern Ireland. They are playing a hugely hugely important role in providing stability within families, providing support and inspiration for others and also for giving hope during these harsh economic times. It is vital that local Government continues to support this Centre through providing the funds to retain the training and childcare facilities and programmes.

2010 is a highly important time for First Steps Women’s Centre. I have received my new First Steps Women’s Centre fleece and jacket. I will wear them with pride.  I will also advocate, promote and inform many people including politicians and funders about the important work that is done within First Steps Women’s Centre.

Roll on 2010, may F.S.W.C. grow from strength to strength.
